The SEO Audit Template is a working XLSX file for organizing a broad website audit. Use it when you need one place to record findings across technical SEO, on-page optimization, content, off-page signals and UX, then turn those findings into a prioritized work queue. The source material confirms a master issue log, category working tabs and a formula-driven summary, with fields used to track severity, effort, ownership, status, actions and validation notes.

This page is for the general SEO audit workbook. If you need a short printable review, use the SEO Audit Checklist. If the work is specifically technical, use the Technical SEO Audit Template.

What the workbook is designed to do

The workbook is most useful between discovery and delivery. It gives the audit team a structured place to record evidence, separate issue severity from implementation effort, assign ownership when it is known, and track whether a recommendation has actually been checked after implementation.

  • Record findings consistently. Keep the issue, evidence, affected area and recommended action together instead of spreading them across notes and crawler exports.
  • Separate diagnosis from prioritization. A severe issue can still have a dependency or high implementation cost; those are different decisions and should remain visible.
  • Support handoff. Owners and status fields help turn an audit into work that development, content, SEO or other teams can review.
  • Track validation. A fix is not complete merely because it was deployed. Use the workbook to record what was rechecked and what remains unresolved.

Who this SEO audit template is for

Use the general workbook when the audit spans several disciplines or when you need one master file for a mixed site review. It can suit an in-house SEO team, consultant, agency or business owner coordinating specialists, provided the person completing it has access to the evidence needed to support each finding.

It is less suitable when the task is only a quick checklist, a technical-only investigation, or a presentation for stakeholders. Those jobs have separate assets so the generic workbook does not have to serve every intent.

How to use the template without turning it into a data dump

  1. Define scope first. Decide which site sections, templates, markets and data sources are in scope before adding findings.
  2. Investigate patterns before logging every URL. When one underlying cause affects many pages, document the pattern and representative evidence instead of creating hundreds of duplicate issue rows.
  3. Record evidence before recommendations. Make it possible for another reviewer to understand why the issue was raised.
  4. Prioritize in context. Consider severity, effort, dependencies and business relevance separately rather than using one opaque score.
  5. Assign an owner when the next action is known. Avoid inventing ownership if the implementation team has not been decided.
  6. Recheck representative examples after changes. Update the status only after the expected state has been verified.

What this template does not replace

The workbook organizes audit work; it does not perform the underlying investigation for you. You still need appropriate crawling, analytics, Search Console, backlink, content and business inputs for the questions in scope. It also is not the final narrative deliverable for stakeholders.

For a report structure, use the SEO Audit Report Template for technical audits. For a technical pass/fail workflow, use the Technical SEO Audit Checklist Template.

Quality check before you hand off the workbook

  • Every priority finding has evidence or a reproducible observation.
  • Severity is not being used as a substitute for effort or business priority.
  • Repeated URL-level symptoms are grouped when one underlying cause explains them.
  • Unknown owners, dependencies or validation results remain visibly unresolved.
  • Format-specific alternatives are linked instead of implying that this XLSX is also a PDF checklist or report.
